Prince has slated Maroon 5’s cover of his 1986 hit ‘Kiss’ as well as aiming a cheap shot at former girlfriend and pop star, Madonna.

The pop icon has returned to the music world and gave us brand new single ‘Screw Driver’ last week amidst reports of a 2013 tour.

Adam Levine’s Maroon 5 included the ‘Kiss’ cover on their latest record Overexposed, but Prince seemed far from impressed. In a candid interview with Billboard, Prince said: “I do pay performance royalties on others' songs I perform live, but I'm not recording these songs and putting them up for sale.”

“Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did? Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what's already there."

Could we be seeing a Prince world tour this year?

The 54-year-old also had a cheap swipe at Madonna, who he once dated, when asked why his relationship with Warner Bros came to an end in 1996.

He explained: “It was also about Madonna. She was getting paid, but at the same time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights."

The singer has reportedly booked six dates at a small jazz club this week to hold auditions for a new drummer, sparking rumours that he is planning to embark on some sort of live tour in the coming year.
