Ultravox's 'Vienna' has been named the greatest ever song to reach number two in the UK charts in a list compiled by Radio 2 and the Official Charts Company.

The track was voted as the winner in a list that included songs from The Beatles, The Who, Queen and The Beach Boys.

Ultravox's frontman Midge Ure said: "We are extremely pleased and very humbled to have been given this honorary number one, especially knowing the outstanding records which were also in the running – Strawberry Fields Forever, Hound Dog and Wonderwall to name just a few."

Vienna was a huge hit after its release in 1981, but was famously beaten to the number one spot by novelty ditty 'Shaddup You Face' by American comedian Joe Dolce.

Martin Talbot of the Official Chart Company told the BBC. "‘Ultravox’s Vienna has beaten off some truly great, classic tracks to claim the title of the UK public’s favourite number two single."

"It is also probably the most apt winner, given the fact that it was kept from the chart summit by Joe Dolce’s Shaddup You Face, which has long been considered one of the biggest chart injustices of all time."

Midge Ure's faith in the public has been restored

Other great tracks that somehow missed out on top spot at their time of release include Oasis' 'Wonderwall' and Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep'.

The recognition seems to have helped Ure get over their 80s chart injustice as he has admitted it had 'restored our faith in the idea that the public will always recognise the good in music.'
