One Direction star Zayn Malik has deleted his Twitter account, saying he can no longer cope with the hateful messages directed at him on the social network.

The 'What Makes You Beautiful' boyband have one of the most dedicated fanbases in music with each member having millions of followers each. However, this level of attention clearly has a downside and Malik has decided he is better off without the hassle.

Revealing his reasons for quitting, Malik Tweeted to say: "The reason i don't tweet as much as i use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily goodbye twitter.

Adding: "Fans that have something to say can tweet me on the one direction account."

Zayn is not the first pop star to delete his Twitter account with both Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks opting out of the social networking site. Both stars did, however, subsequently return to Tweeting shortly afterwards.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that One Direction will join Taylor Swift at this year's Radio 1 Teen Choice Awards in London.
