Celebrities and fans have taken to Twitter to pay their respects to Beastie Boys rapper Adam Yauch, who was reported dead today (4 May, 2012).

Musicians and actors showed their condolences on the social network to the music star, who is thought to have died after a long battle with cancer.

"Thank you for Sabotage bass riff and many other great grooves," says Nirvana star Krist Novoselic. "Adam also worked for justice and peace consciousness."

"Rip dear Adam Yauch. Words can't express the sadness and loss. Ur humor, talent & gentle soul are just irreplacable. Be at peace brother." said Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine.

Justin Timberlake tweeted: "Crushed to hear the news of Adam Yauch's passing. A true pioneer of art. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. #RIPMCA"

Tim Burgess of The Charlatans said: "Adam was a brilliant bass player too, he once tried to buy Martin's after our gig. Now I'm gonna pass the mic to Yauch."

"R.I.P. Adam Yauch Beastie Boys #RIPMCA," said MC Hammer.

"We lost one of our greatest talents today. my prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Adam Yauch. Beastie Boys for life," said model and actress Milla Jovovich.

"Rest on (sic) peace Adam Yauch. Beastie Boys were always the "coolest whiteboys" when I was growing up," said actor Marlon Wayans. "They erased color lines the opposite way."
