Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody has revealed that growing up through the glory days of grunge had a huge impact upon him.

The 'Chasing Cars' singer says he still has fond memories of seeing The Breeders support Nirvana in Belfast, for his second ever gig.

“That's a line-up that hasn't been topped,” he told the newspaper. “People thought Northern Ireland was a scary place at the time, so any band who played Belfast before the ceasefire we ended up loving forever.”

He added: “Nirvana became a massive part of my life and kick-started my desire to be in a band.”

The singer said that his first ever gig was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, supported by The Rollins Band at Belfast's Ulster Hall in 1991.

Snow Patrol embarked on a tour of the UK earlier this week, which climaxes with three nights at London's O2 arena in February.
