Steven Moffat has said that the Doctor Who movie won't reboot the long-running franchise.

The showrunner took to Twitter to address concerns that a Hollywood adaptation of the show would wipe the slate clean, saying that whoever was playing the Doctor when shooting on the film commences would carry on in that role.

He said: "To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot."

Moffat's comments came in an attempt to clarify director David Yates's comments about casting for the movie.

He added: "David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet. You've seen the rubbish I talk when I'm cornered."

Doctor Who returns to BBC 1 for a festive special on Christmas Day.
