Rowan Atkinson has refused to rule out the possibility of Blackadder returning to television.

The show ran for four series' in the 1980's, attaining legendary status, but has been off the air since World War I-based Blackadder Goes Forth in 1989.

The only appearance of Edmund since then was the special film made for London's Millenium Dome, Blackadder: Back and Forth, in 1999.

Speaking to ITV's Daybreak, Atkinson admitted a new series was unlikely, as: "We're all just getting a bit old for that kind of thing."

He continued: "I mean it could be reprised in some form or other, but generally speaking The Blackadder seemed to work best when there was a sort of claustrophobic world and a hierarchy. So if you can think of any situations in which they are dominant - then I think there is a possibility of a fifth series."

Atkinson stars in James Bond spoof Johnny English Reborn, which is released on October 7.
