Songs by the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have been banned in China after the Ministry of Culture said they contained “vulgar content”.
Ministers have asked websites to remove a total of 100 tracks by September 15. It is thought the songs were not submitted for approval.
They include Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’, host of Lady Gaga tracks, such as ‘Judas’, ‘Hair’ and ‘The Edge Of Glory’, and Backstreet Boys’ ‘I Want It That Way’.
Although it is not known how the songs are chosen, The Guardian reports that many are by artists from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
China has developed a notoriously hard line reputation when it comes to censoring music.
Artists including Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones were asked to remove certain songs from their sets when performing in the country.
