The first episode of this year's X Factor attracted an average of 10.5million viewers.
The programme returned for an eighth series on Saturday (August 20), with a new line-up of judges, including Take That's Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland.
There had been fears that the show's popularity would plummet following the departure of Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole, but last year's opening episode only earned 11.1million viewers.
Saturday's audience peaked at 12million, according to broadcaster ITV.
As previously reported on Gigwise, the new judges, who joined long-standing judge Louis Walsh, have proved popular with the public.
The series continues on ITV1 next Saturday (August 27) at 8pm.
