More about: Babyshambles
Pete Doherty was refused a visa to play a one-off gig in America, it’s been reported.
The Babyshambles singer was set to perform alongside Sean Lennon and Adam Green at Milk Studios in New York last week.
However, Doherty was denied entry by US custom officials at JFK airport. He was then asked to board a return flight to London.
Doherty has a string of drug convictions, but thought he would still be allowed into the US, according to The Sun.
As previously reported on Gigwise, Doherty will rejoin his former Libertines bandmates to play the Reading and Leeds festivals in August.
Rocks Stars With Visa Trouble
Boy George – The singer was denied a visa in the summer of 2008 after setting his sights on a US tour. His lawyers claimed it had nothing to do with his former drug busts...and we’re supposed to believe THAT one?
Lily Allen – The ‘Smile’ singer was denied entry in Los Angeles during the summer of 2007 after allegedly getting a bit kung fu on photographers in London. She later was forced to cancel several dates and appearances in American including the MTV VMAs.
Snoop Dogg – “Denied Visa” should be Snoop Dogg’s middle name. After getting denied one in the UK from being arrested in April of 2007 due to ‘violent disorder and affray” he then was denied the ability to even apply for an Australian visa in the same year. The Aussies have a few nice bones in their body andhave now let him in. Good luck with the next country you apply in Snoop…
Happy Mondays – Being the dancer in the Happy Mondays proves to have its bad days. After planning their first US shows in 15 years, the band was forced to cancel two shows in New York and later went on to play without Bez at their performance in Coachella. Reasons for the denied visa? “Tightening immigration and working visa legislation”.
The View – The band has canceled performances in the States not once but twice! First is was lead singer Kyle Falconer’s cocaine possession in February of 2007. Then it was all four members experiencing visa problems. Its safe to say us Americans won’t be seeing much of these Scots any time soon.
Pete Doherty – Surprise, surprise…well look who turned up on our list. After being repeatedly denied for drug abuse and legal problems, the Babyshambles front man seriously believes that he can prove to American politicians he’s good for the economy and THAT will get him a visa. Not going to happen Pete.
Yusuf Islam – The singer, formerly known as Cat Stevens, was denied entry into the United States "on national security grounds" in September 2004 while en route to Nashville to record an album. His visa issues were cleared up some time after and he returned in 2006 to the US to promote his album ‘An Other Cup’.
M.I.A – US immigration officials refused to let the singer/rapper into the US in 2005 after hearing her lyrics supporting Sri Lanka's rebel Tamil Tigers. She was set to record her latest album ‘Kala’ but got flat out denied. Then she was denied again in 2007, forcing her to cancel several US appearances. Can she ever get a break?
Rumble Strips – Dates opening for the Cold War Kids and solo shows in 2007 were never played due to the band being denied a US visa. Finally, their visas were approved in 2008 and the band plans to fulfill their previous plans touring America.
The Beatles – Before they became legends they were stuck playing hot and sweaty Hamburg clubs night after night for a couple of hundred people. The shows lasted for a year until George Harrison was deported for being underage. A week later, Paul McCartney and Pete Best got arrested and deported for starting a small fire in their living quarters.
John Lennon – In 1972, the legend’s US visa wad revoked because of fears that his strong political views would provoke anti-war violence. Lennon won the fight three years later when a federal judge overruled the INS and gave the singer his green card.
The Enemy – The Conventry boys were denied a US visa for their first ever dates in the country in 2008. The boys have since played several dates in the US and will be back again next year, unless they’ve got another visa denial in their future.
Young Knives – The band were stuck canceling five shows on their 2007 US tour citing visa issues. According to the band it was “some kind of random routine red tape crap twattery”. Eventually they made it to America and were able to perform.
Reverend and the Makers – In April 2008 the band were set to play two dates, making their US debut in New York and a performance at Coachella. That was short lived as the band canceled both appearances citing visa issues.
Amy Winehouse – The singer was denied entry into the US in early 2008 after a previously planned performance at the Grammy Awards. She went on to perform in London via satellite and collected 5 awards including record of the year hot her hit ‘Rehab’. How appropriate.
Velvet Revolver – The band were forced to cancel their Japanese tour in late 2007 after being denied a visa based on immigration officials “taking exception with the backgrounds of various band members, which have included arrests”. What do you expect when you have Scott Weiland and former members of Guns N Roses in your band?!
Klaxons – Their first short tour of the US was cancelled in late 2006 due to the band's youth and its small recorded output. They’ve been back quite frequently since…We guess they’ve grown drastically in band years by American standards.
Mystery Jets – The band were forced to push back their tour of the States in the summer of 2007 citing visa issues. The band stated that it was due to "the unfortunate reality of delays in paperwork and processing" and were able to perform later in the year.
The Duke Spirit – After hooking up with Ted Leo for a U.S. tour in early 2006, the band were forced to cancel the first two dates of the tour citing visa issues. Receiving their visas by an intrepid courier and hoping on a plane several hours later, they were able to continue as planned.
Sam Sparro – Cancelling dates he scheduled for August 2008, rescheduling them in September and then cancelling again seems to be Sam Sparro’s plan to take over America. Citing visa issues due to his band not being together for approximately one year, no dates have been planned for the near future.
Handsome Furs – The Canadian pop duo was forced to cancel several dates on their spring 2007 tour citing visa issues. They were able to play several dates shortly after but made it clear that U.S. Border Protections “have come down pummelling; making it extremely difficult for touring bands to enter the country”.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela – Rodrigo Sanchez, one part of Mexican guitar duo was denied a visa into the U.S. because his name was similar to that of a wanted criminal. Officials later realized it was a mix up and the visa was granted.
Liza Minelli – The singer who was set to have a her first British concert tour in two decades got off to a terrible start after immigration tried to hold her back from entering the country due to an incorrect work permit. She was granted entry only hours before her first scheduled performance.
