Heavy metal musician Ronnie James Dio has died at the age of 67.

Dio, who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, passed away at his home on Sunday morning (May 16).

The vocalist is understood to have been battling cancer.

In a statement on Dio's website www.ronniejamesdio.com his wife Wendy said "my heart is broken".

"Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away," the statement said.

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us."

In 2006, Dio joined Heaven and Hell with his former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice.

  • Dio is one of two men in history, along with Brian Johnson who has been able to continue a band as a lead singer, and still have the band be good at the same time. He's a heavy metal god, and now that he's gone, he shall live on in all headbangers hearts for all time. Every time the devil horns are raised, Dio shall live on.

  • RJD was a very large part of my life (My first concert was RJD and Dokken @ the summit ) I will miss him greatly and my heart goes out to his family.

  • Dio was, has been & will forever be a big part of my life. as a sole vocalist & especially his band Dio. One true Heavy Metal magic band of the '80s. "former Black Sabbath vocalist who replaced Ozzy"??? hmm...Dio was always a better band than Black Sabbath. and Him "going" first before all those guys, just proves that. The Best always go early & before the rest. I always thought Dio was better than Black Sabbath, Deep Purple & Ozzy combined. now I know.
