Green Day’s American Idiot musical has been slammed by US theatre critics.
The production, which was one of the most anticipated Broadway shows of the year, opened at New York's St. James Theatre on Tuesday (April 20).
However, the musical, which follows three frustrated youths as they search for meaning post-9/11, failed to win over critics.
The New York Post said “American Idiot is only a breath away from an American Idol”, while the New York Observer concluded that it was “a little dull”.
The Washington Post described the show as “ordinary”.
The New York Daily News said: "Thanks for the music, Green Day. But, jeez, could you have spared a story?
“And a couple characters who aren't cliche stick figures?"
But the New York Times’ critic was more taken by the production, describing it as a "thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought Broadway musical".
Green Day were among the audience on the opening night, and have previously admitted to finding the show moving.
