Boy George has defended Sir Elton John after he claimed that Jesus was a “super intelligent gay man” who “understood human problems”.
Sir Elton faced a barrage of criticism when he made the comment in an interview with Parade last month.
“Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving,” he told the magazine. "I don't know what makes people so cruel.
“Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you're as good as dead.”
But Boy George has backed the veteran singer's comments, insiting that he has been misunderstood.
"I think he was trying to say that Jesus was compassionate,” the singer told The Sun newspaper.
"I think that's true - the whole message of Christianity is about compassion. I think that's the point he was trying to make.
"But I don't want to put words into his mouth - we're good friends now so I want to stay on his good side!"
Elsewhere in the interview with Parade, Sir Elton also attacked the notion of celebrity, saying it attracts “lunatics".
