Guitarist John Frusciante has revealed he actually quit Red Hot Chili Peppers more than a year ago.
There had been confusion over Frusciante's future since a report earlier this week claimed he had left the group.
Now, in a message on his blog, the guitarist has confirmed that he has parted company with his former bandmates.
“When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus,” he said.
“There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.”
Frusciante went on the blame his own “musical interests” for influencing his decision.
He added: “I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests.”
Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently working on their next album.
The follow-up to 2006's 'Stadium Arcadium' is due to be released next autumn.
