The video game Rock Band has generated sales of more than $1billion in North America since it was released fifteen months ago.
Creators MTV Games and Harmonix also revealed that over 40 million tracks have been downloaded and purchased via the computer game.
Rock Band allows gamers to use interactive instruments to play along to songs by the likes of The Strokes and Smashing Pumpkins.
Sales of the game are expected to rise further in 2009 with the release of a special Beatles edition scheduled for September.
The game's main rival, Guitar Hero, which was first released in 2005, achieved $1billion sales in 2007.
