Typical fans of heavy metal music have low self-esteem and don't like to work hard, according to new findings.
But the study into how closely music tastes and personalities are related also found that metal fans were generally more gentle and at ease with themselves than followers of music genres.
The research, which was undertaken by a professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, is the first time the relationship has been studied in such detail.
Like metal fans, indie music lovers were also found to have low self-esteem but the study revealed that they tend to be more creative.
Whereas, followers of genres like Reggae, Rap and chart music were all found to share high confidence levels and a gentle personality.
Commenting on the study, which were accumulated from answers by 36,000 people, Professor Adrian North said advertisers should take note about the results.
"If you know a person's music preference you can tell what kind of person they are, who to sell to,” he said.
"There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales.
"One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but not outgoing.
"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."
What do you think about the results? Are you a metal fan with low self-esteem? Post your thoughts below by filling out the comment form.
