A German football club have sought the help of Pete Doherty in a bid to escape escalating financial problems, it’s been revealed.

KFC Uerdingen, who play in one of the country’s lower regional leagues, hope that an alliance with Doherty, a childhood fan of the club, can boost ticket sales.

Doherty’s manager, Adrian Hunter, confirmed that the club had approached the singer about calling at the stadium during Babyshambles European tour next week.

"I know he has some affection for the club and he would be happy to do something if he has time," Hunter told Reuters.

Doherty supported the football club briefly when he stayed on a British army base near the city of Krefeldas as a youngster.

The clubs marketing director said that the singer had watched the club play a quarter-final second leg tie in UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1986.
