The singer-songwriter morphs into a stop-motion cartoon character

Watch songwriter Eleanor Friedberger stroll through aeroplane isles and forests in this new animated video for ‘It’s Hard’. The song is taken from Rebound, her fourth solo indie pop album released earlier this May. The songwriter was formerly one half of Brooklyn indie rock band The Fiery Furnaces.

According to the video’s director Christine Pfister, explains that: ‘[she] thought it would be fun to put real Eleanor in the doll world and doll Eleanor in the real world. “It’s Hard” is about a Greek nightclub.’ See this very confusing transformation take place in this new video below.

The song itself is a low-key, jaunty and rather jangly pop song with lyrics that take you through Au Revoir, a Greek nightclub: “The last call bell rings at Au Revoir / It’s 3 o'clock and we've closed the bar” Friedberger sings about the bar, which is apparently stuck in between 1982, or 1983 or 1985. “It’s hard to tell,” she quips humorously. Many of these themes came about when Friedberger spent a few months in Athens, as an expat. She really comes across on this album like a fly on the wall of post 2016 election Greece.

Meanwhile, you can also hear Welsh fellow songwriter Cate Le Bon’s remix of Friedberger’s ‘Are We Good’ here as well. Friedberger has long been a fan of Le Bon’s music too, with her saying that she has “admired Cate's work since a friend in LA put on Mug Museum after dinner.”

This video coincides with some UK tour dates which start next week, so if you’re keen there’ll be a lot of opportunities to catch her live in some intimate venues.
