Public Image Ltd have unveiled as headliners for this year’s Rebellion Festival. The long-running punk festival will return to Blackpool’s Winter Gardens on 2 – 5 August.
They’re set to join one of the most impressive punk bills to have been assembled for some time. These include Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, Peter Hook & The Light, Idles, The Adicts, Mad Caddies, The Lovely Eggs, former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe, Theatre Of Hate, The Professionals, Jah Wobble & The Invaders Of The Heart as well as over 200 other bands.
Eagle-eyed punk fans will note that Jah Wobble was Public Image Ltd’s original bassist and played on some of the band’s most vital recordings including the singles ‘Public Image’ and ‘Death Disco’. Also adding to the family tree connection is the appearance of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook with his band The Professionals. Given that there’s no love lost between Public Image Ltd’s John Lydon (nee Johnny Rotten), there’s not really much chance of a love-in between these punk figureheads.
Other notable punk bands joining the bill are – deep breath – Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, The Dickies, Slaughter And The Dogs, Peter And The Test Tube Babies, Anti-Nowhere League , Ruts DC, UK Subs and Discharge.
Public Image Ltd made an impressive comeback when former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon re-activated the band name in 2009. Their 2012 album, This Is PiL, was funded by John Lydon’s now notorious appearance in a TV commercial for Country Life Butter. Their earlier albums, Public Image: First Issue and Metal Box are widely regarded as the cornerstones for the beginning of post-punk and they still resonate to this very day.
