Prior to forming the Cardiff based group in 1993, as a teenager each member of the group had already been part of a band. Initially the Animals were a techno group, but their sound later evolved into progressive pop rock. Two years after they began, they were performing all over Wales and at Celtic festivals across Europe. Shortly after, the group were signed to Cardiff based outfit Ankst. They released their debut EP Lianfairpwllgywgyllgoger Chwymdrobwlltysiliogoygoyocynygofod (In Space), which was sung entirely in Welsh.
By the end of 1995, the band had amassed a cult following in the rest of Britain and had a strong Welsh following. After choosing to sing in English the experimental band subsequently signed a six album deal with Creation records. In 1996 ‘Fuzzy Logic’ their first UK album release, broke into the top 40.
Despite being sung entirely in Welsh the ‘Mwng’ album was a surprise hit. It was the follow up to the successful Guerrilla album, released in 1999. At the time of its release Mwng was the best selling Welsh album of all time.
To date Rings around the world remains their biggest success, reaching number three in the album charts.
