Prince has criticised the state of modern pop music, and the stream of contemporary artists who attempt to emulate his sound, saying, "What good is that? You're essentially in the feedback loop."
The singer recently announced that his new album with 3RDEYEGIRL, the "experimental" HITNRUN, will be released exclusively on Tidal next September.
The album was first announced by Prince's band, 3RDEYEGIRL on BBC at the end of last month, following the release of its first single, 'HARDROCKLOVER'. It was subsequently revealed revealed that the album will be released as a Tidal exlusive on 7 September, in a partnership that, according to a press release, was cemented "out of mutual admiration and respect and a profound belief in artists' rights."
In a new interview with The New York Post ahead of the album's release, Prince said, "I'm not interested in what happened yesterday" - referring to both his run of iconic '80s albums, and the contemporary artists who attempt to emulate that sound.
"There might be music that sounds like me," he said, "but what good is that? You're essentially in the feedback loop. It’s a bad time for music in general. There’s not a lot of pop music in the mainstream that makes you feel scared, that makes you wonder what’s happening."
Later in the interview, Prince returned to the topic to clarify his feelings, insisting, "I'm not the kind of person who’s down on young people in music. Joshua is one of the new generation who can do multiple things. Janelle Monáe is making her own music industry with her music and her label [Wondaland]. She’s not afraid of anybody. One day, she’s gonna be president and no one’s gonna even know what happened!"
HITNRUN is released via Tidal on 7 September.
