Mothxr on social media, Kanye West and mainstream music

Penn Badgley and co. discuss the plus points and pitfalls of music today

"95% of music that you hear is pretty average. Including our music." Mothxr are good at a great many things, but - unless they're working the reverse psychology angle - selling themselves is not one of them.

I'll try and do a better job. Their music comprises funk-laced guitar riffs, sparse drum beats and deliberately opaque lyricism. "Tell me about you karma," demands Penn Badgley in 'Easy', through airy, falsetto vocals. It's a favourite of theirs, he explains, sitting on a park bench in London's Hoxton Square.

Still a little drained from supporting The Neighbourhood at The Roundhouse the night before, the band only really come to life when the subject moves away from their own music. On the subject of Kanye West, for example, Jimmy Giannopoulos has some strong feelings.

"I like looking at Kanye's tweets lately, because people look at it and everyone's saying he's crazy," he says. "A lot of the stuff he writes I'm like, 'Yeah. I kind of see what you're saying. You're just the person who's saying it'. He's very smart in the way Louis CK is smart - he sees things in a way that a lot of people don't choose to look at... I think that guy's a genius, but whatever."

Mothxr's debut album, Centerfold, is out now.
