The world is filled with gambling houses of all shapes and sizes. From spit and sawdust cardrooms in California to the glimmering, glitzy casinos of Macau. Yet the most visited are often the most lavish and luxe, pouring on the high-end charm to appeal to the biggest spenders. So, just what is the most luxurious casino in the world?

Casino de Monte Carlo

Number one on the list of contenders has to be Casino de Monte Carlo. The concept of the casino is woven into the history of Monaco, the small principality on the edge of France where it is situated. Opened in 1865, its original purpose was a business venture that would save the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy. At first, however, a lack of roads to bring visitors in and poor advertising meant it was hardly used.

Accessibility, therefore, has long been a concern for casinos, and is a major reason for the success of online casinos today, where games can be played remotely. Despite this advantage, many online casinos still try to emulate the luxury prestige of classic European land-based casinos like Monte Carlo. For instance, SkyCrown Casino is one of a few online casinos based in Europe that utilize a sleek and upmarket design for their sites to attract patrons. Regal Casino, meanwhile, is another platform that leans into the trope of royal lineage popularized by Monaco’s Princess Caroline, employing crest-like emblems in their logo to differentiate them from competitors.

For over a century, now, however, Monte Carlo has been a well-connected and prime location for the casino, while many other land-based casinos across Europe have tried to achieve a similar reputation over the years. The Casino de Monte Carlo sits in a beautiful building designed by architect Charles Garnier. It has had numerous celebrity guests in its time, and has even played its part in popular culture, featuring in James Bond movies. One of the most lavish times to visit is when the F1 takes place on a famous city circuit around the grounds.

The Venetian

The first known casino in the world was in Venice, Italy. Yet this Venetian is in Macau, an island state and the biggest gambling market in China. The original Venetian Casino was in Vegas, but this one is so much bigger, making it an even greater contender. In its shopping mall below, a winding canal system reminiscent of its namesake can take people around the shops and boutiques.

It’s very easy to feel overwhelmed wandering its intricate gaming halls. Separated into four areas: Golden Fish, Red Dragon and Phoenix, and Imperial House, each has its own themed luxury decor. Each of these is then further broken down into standard and high roller rooms, with a dedicated poker section.

Les Ambassadeurs

The third contender is a wildcard. While many casinos opt for bigger is better, some provide luxury by carefully curating their clientele. One of these is Les Ambassadeurs, a private members’ casino situated in the heart of London. While it does not have the breadth of tables and slot games that large casinos provide, it has exceptional service only found in this type of invitation only casino.

The club itself was formed in 1941 by nightclub owner John Mills. It has been the favorite hangout of royalty at various times, and even actor Christopher Lee was a regular. It also has a place in popular culture history, featuring in the first James Bond movie and even films with pop band The Beatles.

Depending on your penchant for luxury, you may find yourself at any of the establishments above. If you are lucky enough to get an invite, then you may find London calling. If you want to walk in the footsteps of European greats, then Monte Carlo awaits, or for modern Asian luxe, hit Macau. There are plenty more around the world, so pack your bags, your lucky dice and enjoy the best the world has to offer.
