‘Tessellate’, taken from Tokyo Police Club’s debut full length, ‘Elephant Shell’, might not be the most groundbreaking or pioneering release of the year, but it’s Tokyo Police Club doing what they do best. ‘Tessellate’ is short, at just over two minutes forty, but it’s definitely sweet enough - jam packed with jangly guitars, hand clapping accompaniment and reverb a plenty.
A more upbeat arrangement than their most recent release ‘Your English Is Good’, this track is bound to be one of those annoyingly catchy indie-club dance floor fillers, certain to get the throngs tapping and clapping. The pleasant appeal is enhanced by the simplicity of this track, with keyboards used sparingly and crystal-clear vocals supported by uncomplicated and precise drum work. Even the somewhat whiney vocals of front-man Dave Monks seem to add to the charm here. Most crucially of all though, it offers a big enough slice of indie-pop goodness to keep us interested what in the Tokyo Police Club have to offer.
Released 21/04/08 on Memphis Industries.
