There is something twisted and psychedelic in young Joe ‘White’ Williams’ debut, ‘New Violence’. Fashionable electronica is present here in abundance, from sliding circular electro-tones to charming 8-bit interlude, placed haply over a dull and slightly off-pitch eight-beat bass that later thickens with the addition of a reverb-heavy rhythm guitar.
Meanwhile Williams’ vocals are overlaid with an affected indifference that is somewhat of a relief, as the backing is all a little too contrived to be convincing. Though catchy, ‘New Violence’ lacks the melodic hooks needed to really draw the listener in, whilst the electro-sensible accompaniment is so lightweight that it seems to float off into the ether as the track fades, leaving very little impression at all.
Released 14/04/08 on Double Six.
