The genres of indie and pop may well be indistinguishable, at least in some quarters – but this release from The Sonic Hearts displays a definite leaning toward the latter. ‘To Be Someone’ is a guitar driven song, along with nice harmonies and keys which add some texture, in a similar mould to the kind of pop Scouting For Girls have been making recently. It has pleasant melodies and chords, is reasonably catchy, and altogether enjoyably harmless. Whether that’s a good thing or not is up to the listener, but they do it well, even if it does seem a little samey. A redeeming feature is the vocal delivery of frontman Sean Francis Butler, who sounds great when he gives it some welly during the chorus, almost lifting this song out of its pop confines onto a more interesting plane.
Released 31/03/08 on EMI.
