Sam Sparro - 'Black And Gold'

Sam Sparro has had quite a journey in his short 24 years – he impressed the likes of Chaka Khan after moving from Sydney to Pasadena to sing at church thanks to his minister father. He moved to London and has appeared in LA with The Nightwatchman and is only now releasing his debut single ‘Black and Gold’.

The blend of soul, funk and nu-wave drips with energetic exuberance and an air of class albeit for a slightly precariously simple delivery. Opening with vibrancy and the visual sentiments: “If the fish swam out of the ocean/And grew legs and they started walking,” it leads into similar visions before embarking on the crucial pounding beat that carries nonchalantly until the leisurely climax. Potential is evident while perfection is still required to push Sparro from Black and Gold to Platinum and Gold.
