With Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys and LA producer Boom Bip at the helm this was supposed to be pure gold. Supposed be being the operative word. The Titanic was supposed to sail. Lily Allen’s chat show was supposed to be funny. But as her frazzled producers can testify, supposedly doesn’t always turn out quite as expected.
Electro pop is dynamite when done uniquely, not simply a Casio demo button on repeat and predictable nonchalent vocals, in this case coming from Cate Le Bon. This offering just doesn’t fit. Not fast enough to get your dance on, and not melodic enough to relax to, even the remixes on the single have more promise. verall ‘I Lust U’ is a let down when you consider the duo’s forthcoming album ‘Stainless Style’ has such treats as ‘Dream Cars’ and ‘I Told Her On Alderaan’. ‘Lust’ delivers none of the originality that the dreamy synths and Flaming Lips style madness of Neon Neon’s other tracks. Where as the album will soundtrack the summer in a Manhattan MGMT kinda way, ‘Lust’ is nothing but tired New Order electro.
Released 24/03/08 on Lex Records.
