Gnarls Barkley, the chart-topping duo consisting of producer Danger Mouse and vocalist Cee-Lo, return in 2008 with ‘Run’. This first single off sophomore album release ‘The Odd Couple’ due out in April, ‘Run’ is furiously paced. It plays off the current vogue for soul in a speedy concoction of organ and skittering high-hat that push through in under three minutes of relentless high-octane dancefloor energy.
Undoubtedly hoping to match the success of their anthemic debut, ‘Crazy’, which topped the UK charts for nine weeks in 2006, ‘Run’ nonetheless showcases a sound that has moved away from these beginnings. Where ‘Crazy’ rested on laid-back summery vibes, ‘Run’ is dizzyingly rapid, rushing through brass stabs, handclaps and backing yells, suggesting that this soul-sensible pair plan to present an engorged Gnarls Barley sound on the new album.
Released 24/03/08 on Warner.
