Generally, when Serj Tankian unleashes his trademark partnership of instantly recognisable vocal with bouts of lyrical political axe grinding and anti-war sentiment, it’s very hard not to sit up and listen. Better known as lead vocalist of American metalers System Of A Down, ‘Sky Is Over’ is the second single to be taken from his debut solo album ‘Elect The Dead’ and is set against a drift of multilayered instrumentation and melodic piano rumblings. But where this case of flamboyant extravagance, which is moulded into a controlled and soaring chorus, might be suited to an album format, it’s a dubious call as to whether this makes good single fodder; catchy it may be, but great it aint.
Released 18/02/08 on Warner Brothers.
