For a seventeen year old girl from the country the bumpkinesque geographical wilderness that is Eversley (Reading), Laura Marling sure is a fair few years ahead of herself; whether it’s due to her porcelain innocence evoking the brooding fairytale folk of Stephanie Dosen or Marling’s musical competence and multi-layered lyrics, that make her seem far in advance of her years, we couldn’t be sure. ‘Ghosts’ is especially sweet, opening with a bittersweet strum of the acoustic implement; Marling’s vocals are understated; her preoccupation with human emotions attest her brilliance at marking her songs with meaning. In short, Marling’s ethereal, elfish folk should surely reap the recognition it deserves with this single.
Released 28/01/08 on Virgin.
