Like turkey, mince pies and watching re-runs of Home Alone, a Christmas song from The Killers is fast becoming a bit of a yuletide tradition. “Oh Santa, I’ve been waiting on you,” croons Brandon Flowers to Santa with all the innocence of McCauley Culkin. “That’s funny kid, because I’ve been coming for you,” replies Santa, rather menacingly. For the festive period, ‘Don’t Shoot Me Santa’ – like most of Flowers’ lyrics – is utterly depressing. Yet, at the same time, it’s hard to turn off. While he might be telling a tale of depression and murder in the Mojave Dessert, there is a naive innocence to ‘Don’t Shoot Me Santa’ which makes it feel like the perfect song for Christmas. And, of course, there are the sleigh bells.
