‘Have I Been A Fool’ is a brilliant song. Hands down. It carries all of Jack Penate’s usual traits: jangly guitars, catchy lines and choruses that taste like bubblegum and glass. But this latest single has something different, a country style edge to the guitars that is so subtle you’ll barely notice it - yet it completely lifts the sound. B-side ‘If I’d Known’ follows a similar style and lyrical subject (love and sadness) but as always he manages to turn it around with “Oh Ohs!” so it doesn’t seem so bad. The only strange thing about this tune is the odd carousel sounds that build up into the chorus, but in light of such a fantastic single this slightly odd element can be forgiven.
Released 10/12/07 on XL Records.
