Just as Fightstar have successfully shed their badge of ridicule, i.e. ‘the good looking one out of Busted’s new band,’ they give their alliance of fans, ‘Deathcar’ – a song written about Chinese human meat wagons. Yes, that’s right, Charlie Simpson has written a song about Chinese death-row prisoners who are slaughtered for their organs and mixed that tragedy with the ridiculous comedy of discovering that his girlfriend is going out with someone new. “I’m driving and he’s in the back,” Simpson tells us, a little too coolly, in the songs press release. While ‘Deathcar’ certainly contains all the sinister aggression of its bizarre tale through its collision of guitars and vocal howls, this tragicomedy is perhaps one step too far for someone who used to sing about air hostesses.
