The second single to be taken from St. Vincent’s debut album ‘Marry Me,’ ‘Jesus Saves, I Spend’ once again shows Annie Clark’s stunning ability to create textured music from incredibly subtle beginnings. A one woman act, ‘Jesus Saves...’ builds from looped close harmonies which see Clark echo “bam bam bam’s” over an equally absorbing melody. Then, as she bestows concise riffs of a reverbing electronic guitar into the mix the apparent wails of a baby appear to add yet another unexpected twist to the song. ‘Jesus Saves...’ might throw you off the standard musical scent, but every once in a while that’s not at all bad. Astutely brilliant.
Released 26/11/07 on Beggars Banquet.
