After much anticipation and tales of debauched nights spent teasing various record labels who were hungry for their signature, even The Twang would admit that their debut album, ‘Love It When It Feels Like This,’ failed to achieve the success that so many were convinced it promised. Sure it was packed with ‘those’ singles which led to ‘those’ comparisons with such bands as the Happy Mondays and The Smiths but strip it of those moments and you were left with obvious elements of impatient filler.
It’s a surprise then that The Twang have chosen to release, ‘Push The Ghosts’ – one of the first song’s they ever crafted - so long after the momentum they built has seemingly all wilted away. Sampling the bassline of Salt’N’Pepa’s, ‘Push It’ (which is not as bad as it sounds), you can virtually hear The Twang open the latch on the door to their future on, ‘Push The Ghosts.’ “I’ve got a devil in me and he’s pointing to the big time,” projects Phil Etheridge with his usual gravely intensity. Raw and emotive, yes, ‘Push The Ghosts,’ might highlight the fact that The Twang have fallen short of the “big time” but it is a welcome reminder of just what made them attractive to the A&R men in the first place.
Released 26/11/07 on Polydor.
