Pornography And Sleaze - It Can Only Be Singled Out!

The Kinison’s ‘You’ll Never Guess Who Died’ is packed full with youthful exuberance and spitting angst. The jangly guitars that open the track soon give way to shouty vocal-chord-straining wails that are reminiscent of Roddy Woomble before he got all pensive on us. True, this is far from everyone’s cup of tea but it will no doubt appeal to anyone who’s on the unhinged side. Unfortunately, the almost formulaic b-sides are remarkably similar to the lead track, hinting that the band are a bit one-dimensional in their ideas. Haven’t heard the album yet, but methinks it will wear thin after a while.

Featuring the Libertines’ Carl Barat ‘Pornography’ is the seedy new single from the exceedingly sexy Client. Not quite as dirty as the title suggests but still emanating enough sleaze to keep us happy. The track revolves around the oh so provocative chorus, ‘It’s you and me monogamy, just you and me pornography’. Barat’s deep and quite perverted vocals perfectly juxtapose the seductive utterances of Kate Holmes and Sarah Blackwood and makes for a rousing listen. For any hot-blooded males pumped with testosterone out there, the track is well worth buying for the front cover alone (hint: look closely at Sarah’s shirt).

After a multi-million selling 2004, all conquering Aussies Jet are releasing the final single from ‘Get Born’ ‘Get Me Outta Here’. A limited 7-inch only with no extra tracks, the single begs the question; why bother? It’s doubtful whether the release will help them shift any more units and will only give them limited publicity for their already over exposed arses. The track will truly only appeal to purists of the retrogressive rockers who want to impress their friends. ‘Get Me Outta Here’ itself is a stomping, hollering and completely derivative rock ditty that you’ll either love or find completely vacuous. I’m opting for the latter.

Judging from the cover Pink Grease look like a band who have stumbled across Marilyn Manson’s make-up bag and have haphazardly plastered the contents over their faces. A familiar theme this week, the extremely catchy ‘Strip’ oozes with sleaze, sex and a healthy dose of good old rock n’roll bluster. Despite their gothy looks on the sleeve, the Sheffield five-some don’t spout bile and preach about Satan, but positively exude an infectious swagger with Rory Lewarne’s vocals owing more to The Music’s Robert Harvey than anything else. Great.

If you like Snow Patrol, Gene, Embrace or any other stirring indie bands of a similar ilk, you’ll no doubt already love Long-View. Double A-sided single ‘When You Sleep/Coming Down’ is a rousing slab of heart felt indie-rock that will have the hairs standing up on the back of your neck - if this is your kind of thing that is. Rob McVey’s soft, fragile vocals are undoubtedly poignant and the band’s strong point - in fact it’s only a matter of time until Long View crack the top ten and reach the dizzy heights of indie stardom. Despite the promise of the New Order-esque guitars on ‘Coming Down’, the track doesn’t amount to much.
