Happy we are - a re-issue of 'Young Folks,' which happened to be one of the hush hush exuberant singles of '06 from Peter, Bjorn And John's, 'Writer's Block'. With wistful vocal assistance from Victoria Bergsman of class-act Taken By Trees (and The Concretes),'Young Folks' captures all the dreamy innocence, longing and possibility of youth with its' funky bongos beating a catchy tune with whistle-along refrains - "...I can tell there's something going on/ hours seem to disappear/ everyone is leaving/ I'm still with you...." A tune with the rub!
Too clever Phones Problem Child Mix with its crunching beats provides a dadaist cut/mash-up of disparate parts with the whistle sampled to poor effect, like the dog's gone missing, two verses form a reprieve, but this is a mix that's long got lost up its own digital entrails. The Diplo Mix is more of a cherry - by taking out the bongos and maintaining the simplicity from the original song structure, a percussive lift from programmed beats and funky synth lines makes for a chipper remix. File 'Young Folks' next to Teenage Kicks and Pet Sounds.
Released 17/09/07 on Wichita Recordings.
