Elvis Perkins follows the path laid down by Willy Mason’s gentle acoustics but there is something very special about his music despite the tried and tested formula. 'While You Were Sleeping' is a sincere, lyrically inspired track with a perfect measure of pace, increasing as it goes. The acoustic lead off allows focus on the lyrics before the percussion and then brass section create a satisfying feeling of completeness. This is as inspiring acoustic track as you might wish to hear this year all in one masterful stroke. From simplicity to complexity the musical accompaniment merely seals the deal on an outstanding single.
Released 30/07/07 on XL Recordings.
