The Checks – 'Take Me There'

Clad in skin-tight jeans and Chelsea boots, it comes as no surprise to realise that New Zealanders, The Checks, have a great affinity for the ‘60s and the R’n’B (that’s er, Rhythm and Blues) artists that dominated the era. Indeed, with its bluesy guitar thrashing, this is more John Lee Hooker than Johnny Borrell. Frontman, Ed Knowles, even does his best Jagger when he hollers “oh, take me there” on the 'Take Me There's' chorus. However, quite where he wants to be taken is anyone’s guess, because, due in part to a rather routine chord progression, this goes absolutely nowhere. Disappointing.

    • The Checks first break came when REM heard them on a cd they found in a hotel room in Vienna- they asked The Checks to support REM on their New Zealand tour. The editor from the NME then heard them when on holiday in NZ and asked them to play on the 2005 New Music Tour with The Rakes, Maximo Park and The Cribs. Soon after they supported The Hives in Tokyo and Oasis on a tour of Australia.
