Ah, another band from the Liverpool production line, churning out an uplifting, jaunty indie pop number. What a surprise. While The Sonic Hearts mat yet prove to have more in their arsenal than that, it’s hard to not get a tad weary when ‘Hold On’ kicks in, with shimmering guitars and sweet harmonies present and correct. It’s a sound fit for lazing around on warm summer afternoons (though perhaps not as suitable for the Biblical deluge of rain the country is currently suffering). All the bases are touched, a bit of La’s whimsy, the Zutons without the sax, the Coral without the eccentric touch that sets them apart.
However, the track itself is still pleasing enough, in a fairly undemanding way. Vocalist Sean has a decent voice and the musicianship is well crafted enough, creating a hummable little tune that doesn’t offend. Sadly, while 'Hold On' is nice there’s absolutely nothing in it to break The Sonic Hearts out of the pack, nothing that really grabs the listener’s attention. OK enough, but more will be required in the future unless they want to become another also-ran.
