According to Korn’s ineffaceable frontman, Jonathan Davis, the human race has not evolved since monkeys. His critique may be spun from a disdain of America’s involvement in the Middle East - “we’re the bullies – same shit in the monkey world” – but the irony will not be lost among the band’s legion of fans that’ve seen their idols’ sound change considerably in the past decade. Fieldy’s propulsive bass-grind may remain, but whereas their 1994 debut languished in a muddied cesspool of atonal instrumentation, here the band hooks into an industrial groove that’s not only satisfying but almost danceable. Surprisingly good.
