Paul Weller & Graham Coxon - 'This Old Town'

starstarno starno starno star
A meeting of minds it’s very unlikely too many would have needed, you’d expect with this some sort of great ode or elegy to London - and that’s basically what's been attempted. The song does at least eschew the dad-rock arrogance of modern Weller for Coxon’s buzzsaw guitar pop but this is very, very boring music. It is perfectly acceptable, structured and crafted as you would expect and with a pretty decent mini-solo but in all honesty, its actually Weller’s blustery voice that holds it back slightly. The chorus is strong but sounds very like Stone Roses ‘She Bangs The Drums’ without the trippy sunshine of that classic. Overall, you’d struggle to recommend this on the strength of this song but the limited edition 7” that will follow at the end of July will contain solo songs from the two so we await the results of that.

Released digitally on 02/07/07 and Physically on 30/07/07 via Regal

  • Outragous review boring I think not- Sam Umsted’s bag most likely to be Red hot Chilli/Saxon/Megadeth and ponsing about with a goatee beard circa 1992! This is Weller and Coxon with the biggest mod classic since Wellers last single!

  • andy newsome, you are wrong - this reviewer is spot on, the track is formulaic garbage. If you want mod classics, listen to northern soul music, or the who or the small faces. Weller was always a johnny come lately anyway...
