The Go! Team seem to have picked up quite a cult following over the past couple of years since their kaleidoscope debut became a technicolor sleeper hit. I personally never got on board with anything from that record, it all seems half-sketched and undercooked, if certainly filled with charm. For me, a sense of conviction to the cause was lacking and left me feeling a little confused about this band’s aims. ‘Grip Like A Vice’ eschews this nicely. They’ve added squalls of electro and garage noise and a fabulous guitar line that runs through. The voices are slightly uninspiring, but the charm remains making this the strongest thing they’ve released yet - and while not as instantly accessible as previous singles, it holds a deeper sense of the band’s vision and strikes a promising chord for the second album.
