Who could predict that Dev Hynes’ follow-up to Test Icicles, surely the worst named band of recent years and pretty dull despite the agit-thrash moments, would come out sounding like he’d spent the downtime between old and new bands listening to the About a Boy soundtrack. ‘Galaxy of the Lost’ has a deeply telling title, Hynes indeed sounding out of place, if not intergalactic, on this folksy wondering that is equal parts Badly Drawn Boy and pastoral Bloc Party. Hynes simply doesn’t have that warmth of voice to fully carry the song off, ending up with a half-baked slice of south-coast sunshine pop you’ll forget immediately.
