Last year the name Nerina Pallot was hard to escape. Adverts for her debut album ‘Fires’ were on relentlessly, and she was tipped for big things. But things since have died down and with this cover of Steedy Dan being her fourth single from her debut, she’s either trying to appeal to a different audience or she’s getting all the attention she can get before moving onto the inevitable second album. Her take on the 1977 hit is somewhat weak. Suiting her voice yet never going that extra step forward, 70’s-esque keyboards take charge and the lyrics originally written three decades ago, seem out of date. However, Pop could be better and Pallot still has the potential to be one of the few people to improve the genre for good despite this lacklustre effort.
