Newcastle’s Kubichek! have big ambitions, there's no doubt about that. You can’t criticise them from adding a bit of atmosphere to their songs - they’d sound pointless without the delaying echo that engages you within the pluck of the first note. ‘Stutter’, however, is a stunning example of showing the contributions made by each member of the quartet. Drumming is similar to other songs, fast-paced, skilled, vocals are authoritative, the bass doesn’t stay in the shadows either and it all evens out in the second release from the outstanding debut album, ‘Not Enough Night’. The structure is progressive, you don’t quite know when it’ll all end, it could be mistaken for a poem being read over music, but that’s not a weakness. It will transfix you the first time you hear it, but each time, it’ll probably transfix you more and more, a grower of a song indeed. Enjoy Kubichek!, it’ll be hard not to.
