‘Where Are You Now?’ is in so many ways its own self-fulfilling prophecy. Gloriously, utterly, disorientating, this is a pop-record conceived in a carnival of carnage and confusion. From the occult-esque harmonies of the intro to ska- laced guitars to the breathless steamroller of a chorus, every moment is a new direction, a new turn and a new irrespirable two-step dance to gleefully disregarding the boundaries. The record manages to sound so tight, yet built on foundations of chaos. It’s a bit like a house-party you have no recollection of, but a house party that was rooted firmly on a car crash. It’s messy, ridiculous, and a hell of a lot of fun. B-side ‘Just Don’t Know’ is the mournful aftermath: bluesy, winsome guitars start off yet another hacienda-bender. There’s more paranoia, more angst, more depth here, but still somehow a damn good time. They don’t know, and listening to this, we probably don’t either. When it’s this catchy and bewilderingly fun, as they themselves say: ‘it feels so right, and it feels so wrong.’ Unique, baffling, and puzzlingly brilliant.
