Imagine this - you live in Manchester but don’t like Oasis. Not too hard really as it’s not like they play there every week. Thing is, the local scene is knee deep in Gallagher wannabes and this is what made Gary Mclure and Phil Kay form Working For A Nuclear Free City. Their fight against mediocre pub bands takes the form of lo-fi Beta Band esque groove laden electronic workouts. ‘Rocket’ begins with an acoustic guitar looped over the top of maraca shakes and sleepy vocals that build and build into a glorious crescendo whilst ‘Stone Cold’ sounds like a dense version of Elbow. WFANFC sound less like a proper ‘rock band’ and more like the kind of music you may hear at an art installation or producing the score to an obscure film. Not to everyone’s taste but by pushing musical boundaries, and trying to rid the world of Oasis juniors they get our support.
