'To the East' was probably written during the World Cup, with Electrelane's Verity Susman singing of "Walking around in this flag waving town". It's a yearning tale of train station romance. Try to forget those stale sandwich's on sale and think instead of Brief Encounter... "I saw you waiting for a train and then you disappeared, face pressed up to the window". There's what sounds like the dying strains of a church organ, lasting the course of 'To the East', adding gravitas. On the flip-side is 'Carolina Wren', an instrumental with bird-song that's a cut above cheap mood music. The peaks and troughs of the trumpet could be following the tempo of a bird at the mercy of the wind.
